Spectrum TV App

Senior UI Designer // Charter Communications

The debut of the Spectrum TV App for Roku provided a cheaper alternative to consuming live television and put Charter at the forefront of the cable industry. Our collaborative team efforts led to an unprecedented company achievement – we launched on time and under budget.

New to TV design, I faced unique challenges and had to adapt to a platform with few standards. I worked closely with UX, product and development to streamline processes and cement standards. As our team grew, I led the effort to create a design system for our video platforms.

After launching the Roku app, we leveraged results from user testing and iteratively added features to provide a more robust experience. With a smaller user-base and a faster delivery process, we really pushed for innovation on the app. Using real-time data and success, we were able to influence change on the more conservative set-top-box experience.

Once the Roku app stabilized, my UX partner and I were given the opportunity to design a more feature-robust version for Apple TV. We took advantage of Apple TV's powerful processor and pushed the limits to create cutting-edge video experiences.

We worked on creating an Apple-centric experience for 2 weeks before all future endeavors were put on hold in anticipation of the merger with Time Warner Cable.

Post merger, we inherited a more robust Roku app as well as Xbox and Samsung TV apps. I managed design and development in an effort called One App. This involved getting all three apps to feature parity as well as aligning their designs to the Spectrum family of products.

Following the completion of One App, I led weekly design workshops to achieve visual and experiential alignment between our video platforms. Over the course of three months, we succeeded in defining detailed UI specs, interaction notes, accessibility requirements and usage and delivery guidelines. I managed the TV UI kit and shared the document with designers and developers alike.
